Stolen from Bethany's Blog

This is the transcript of an actual radio conversation of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October, 1995.

Radio conversation released by the Chief of Naval Operations on November 10, 1995.

Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision.

Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

Americans: This is the Captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.

Canadians: No. I say again, you divert YOUR course.

Americans: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN, THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES' ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS, AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH, THAT'S ONE FIVE DEGREES NORTH, OR COUNTER-MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP.

Canadians: This is a lighthouse. Your call.

If I could make it rain today
And wash away this sunny day down to the gutter
I would
Just to get a change of pace
Things are getting worse, but I feel a lot better
And that's all that really matters to me

We've waited so long
For someone to take us back home
It just takes so long
Meanwhile all the days go drifting away
And some of us sink like a stone
Waiting for mothers to come
There has to be a change I'm sure
Today was just a day fading into another
And that can't be what a life is for
And anything she said well she feels a lot better
And that's all that really matters to me

On Being Female

Last night I got together with two of my dear female friends. We stood out under the sky and observed several rites of spiritual cleansing. Afterwards we sat in the hot tub and talked about things ranging from childhood memories to current events to possibilities of different cosmic planes...

And it was wonderful. Just stealing a few hours away from my routine was wonderful. I bow to the grace of my friends and praise their inner and outer beauty.

Here are a few things we concluded:

1) People choose. As simple as that sounds, it takes a lot of strength and trust to really accept that people are choosing their reality daily, especially when we see the results of their choices and are unhappy with them. There's the school of thought that follows the basic concept that before we are born, human souls choose which lessons they are going to tackle in their life. Now, no matter if you agree with this idea or not, if you choose to apply it in your life, you have a sudden deep realization that people really ARE in charge of their own lives, and that their life's path is never truly negative. Negativity seems to lead us closer to the truth.

2) We have the option to remain peaceful and holy regardless of our surroundings. Again, this may sound easy, but when I think of how I reacted these last few weeks when things did not go my way, there was nothing peaceful or holy about it. I was OUTRAGED, and I felt that I had every right to be so. Everyone I talked to validated my reactions. In retrospect, I had the right to be upset, but I didn't have to get "ugly" about it, as they would have said when I was a child. There's a way to recognize situations and actions that are causing you discomfort and adressing them without becoming mean.
I just don't always seem to remember that when I'm upset.

3) You really do represent infinite possibilities. Allow me to assert that this is not just hippie mumbo-jumbo. If you make a decision, it necessarily affects not only your future, but also the future of ... everyone else. Your smallest actions are ripples in the fabric of humanity. That's a beautiful and terrible thing. Enjoy.

Angry Emma

I suppose confession truly is good for the soul. However, the code of Ahimsa, which I strive to honor, prevents me from saying things that would be harmful. On the other hand, if I don't vent about this, I may end up thinking harmful thoughts for another week. Therefore, in the least harmful way possible, I will describe my current frustration.

Ben's car broke down. Not his fault. We are currently a one-car unit. Not his fault.

However.

Leaving his broken car at the mechanics for three weeks...
Not putting gas in our shared vehicle...
Sometimes taking the car and not telling me where he is when I need the car...

I'm getting very angry. I don't want to have to get another car or anything, but this transition period is pushing my limits.

The other thing is that he's gone 60 hours a week between work and school. He's tired. He's busy. I'm feeling alone. These rough patches are no fun.

See, I feel better already.

Regarding blogs, dead and alive

The other night I was talking to David about his blog. I asked him to update it, and he said "No. I don't need it anymore. I don't have anything to be angry about." (He said something very similar to that, at least.) I've been thinking about that ever since. I've noticed that, in my own work, when I'm not unhappy or worried or depressed or angry or outraged... I don't have a whole lot to say. My work becomes routine, turgid, silly, or worst of all, nonexistent. I haven't felt the impetus to write for quite some time, yet I've felt like keeping up on my blog was a good thing. When I really think about it, though, WHY is it a good thing? So people can come skim it and say, "Yup, she's alive! She may not be a thinking, creative being anymore, but she's alive!" I don't really want to delete my blog because at one point, it was really fun and interesting. I mean... I had a lot of fun and I was interested in writing about things. What do I have to talk about now? The test I took on Thursday? The papers I'm writing? How nice my job is? My new ratlet? My wonderful husband?

Ooo... Fascinating... Please, tell us more about life on the edge!

*sigh* So this is what I was thinking: everyone seems to have let their blogs fall aside except for Brian, perhaps. Most of us post sporadically, and when we do, we don't say anything truly important, do we? I mean, Teresa blogs all the time about things that fascinate me, but she has KIDS. Not to belittle her accomplishment of consistently intriguing blogwork, but come on: what's more interesting than kids? Not a whole lot.

What I think I'm trying to say is that I'm not sure I see the point of all this anymore.

Let me know how you feel.

So it's back to a normal template...

I'm not sure if anyone noticed, but my other template was having hosting issues. I couldn't even get my new posts to show... and I was going a bit batty. So while this template may be ordinary... BORING, even... it's functional. I will like not having to wonder if my page is displaying.

Questions? Comments? Concerns?

Peter is home!

So Peter is finally out of the army and back home with me. I've missed him so much while he's been gone. A few phone conversations and a few visits just hasn't been cutting it! He's the only big brother I've got, and the stress of him possibly being smashed to bits, cut to ribbons or blown up has NOT been fun.

I'm sure it wasn't fun for him, either, really... but HE'S the one who went and joined the army. *grumbles*

Anyway, congratulations Petey!!! So glad to have you home, darling.

I Want a Dog

My mother has a Cavalier King Charles named Trixie. She was the flower girl in my wedding, from which you might deduce that I love her. I do. My mom is talking about perhaps breeding her and giving me a puppy (for a fee slightly less than that of the normal 900 - 1,200).

So you know me, right? I've been obsessing about having a dog ever since. Now I'm dreaming about it... And not in a "Oh, how cute and lovely, I have a dog" kind of a way; it's more like "No! Bad dog! Don't walk in the paint!"

Of course, we can't have pets in our apartment, so it wouldn't be possible until we move, but it does give me one more thing to look forward to.
